| 内容記述 | Betsugan wasan jikidan sho [A Commentary on Ippen Shonin's Buddhist Chants] by Shozan (1665-1726), a Buddhist monk and scholar of the Ji school of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism, is a book of annotation on a series of Buddhist chants attributed to the founder of the school, Ippen Shonin (1239-1289), and collected in Ippen shonin goroku [The Record of Ippen Shonin's Teachings]. Published by Jishumon Shobo (the publishing section of the Ji school) in 1714, it annotates these doctrinal chants ムメBetsugan wasan モムwith abundant quotations from the sutras both orthodox and unorthodox in the Ji school, and also explains the doctrine of the school with the help of various Buddhist legends. The present study defines the characteristic of Shozan's work by surveying the classical Buddhist writings he cites in it, and analyzes his attitude as an annotator through the comparison between the Buddhist legends quoted in his commentary and their original versions. To make clearer Shozan's uniqueness, this study also contrasts his commentary with the other two Buddhist works on "Betsugan wasan," Betsugan wasan kochu [The Old Annotation of "Betsugan wasan"] by Hoji (1563-1640) and Betsugan wasan shinchu [The New Annotation of "Betsugan wasan"] by Ippo (1664-1725). | |||||||||||
