| 内容記述 | The term KATEI has two meanings according to Kojien dictionary (fifth edition, 2003): One is a gathering of such people as husband and wife, parent and child, who live together; another is the place where a family lives. These definitions show that KATEI has two aspects, but do not lead to understanding of how they are inter-related. A purpose of this study is to clarify the process in which the term KATEI was conceptually constructed and reconstructed over time in Japan's modernization. As a basis of my analysis, I started with delineating the ideological and physical aspects of KATEI drawing on discourses on family-related topics in historical materials. Then I analyze three relationships among three terms of “family", “yard of the house" and “happy circle", that is, between “family" and “happy circle", between “happy family circle" and “yard of the house", and between “family" and “yard of the house". The original term KATEI means a place to live. In Meiji period, the term home came to be translated as KATEI, and through the translation process, a new meaning was attached to the term KATEI that KATEI had a function of tying persons not merely when they were working together but when they were making a happy family circle. The KATEI was conceptualized as a substantial set of house and yard. After that, as a yard became removed from KATEI, it was reconstructed as an imagined place where the harmony was stressed among family members. In order to realize a happy and harmonious family circle, various proposals were made. Over time the proposals were changed more geared to how to have amusements and hobbies among family members and even for individuals. As the physical concreteness of KATEI was disappearing, the place where happy family circle was practiced has been reduced to just indoor. | |||||||||||
