内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Ueshiba Morihei (1883-1969) started developing Aikidō from the last years of the 1920s decade on, based on the jujutsu and kenjutsu techniques he had practiced up until this time, especially Daito ryu jujutsu. In his technical manual of 1938 named "Budō", Ueshiba starts the essay that opens the book with this line: "Budō is the way of the Kami by them founded, as the way of the spirit of the infi nite and eternal creation of the whole world, which is true, good and beautiful." "Budō", the martial arts, are mentioned in connection with 'Kami', and defi ned as the way of the divine. Since Ueshiba states that "Budō is the way of the 'Kami' by them founded", it comes clear that the idea of deity occupies a very important place in his "Budō" theory. Looking at his writings, it can be seen that whenever he explains "Budō", he places 'Kami' at its core. However, there has been no thorough research into where this concept of deity is taken from, or what its nature is. This paper analyses the concept of deity in the context of Ueshiba Morihei's thought and examines its relationship to "Budō" and Japan. Taking up Ueshiba's writings from the 1930s, the formative years of Aikidō, it attempts to shed light on the question of what 'deity' means to him and how it is defined in his theory of "Budō". The concept of deity in Ueshiba's writings is examined from four aspects: (1) Deity and man, (2) Deity and Budō, (3) Individualized deities, and (4) Deity and Japan. In Ueshiba's writings, there are two types of deities of different divine nature: the complete 'Kami' and the “kami of heaven and earth". By aligning oneself with the kami of heaven and earth, one can grasp the power of the divine miitsu, and at the same time draw the Kami into the body for the advancement of the cosmos. This is for Ueshiba the true Budō, and the relationship between man and deity. In addition, Ueshiba recognized that in order for the union of the man and the kami of heaven and earth to become possible, there had to be a being who could intervene as a guide. This was the emperor, and he defined this union through the guidance of the emperor as the 'Divine-Imperial Way' (Kōdō). Therefore, in Ueshiba's theory the deity is universal and absolute, yet multiple and reachable. At the same time, it has a particularity that is only connected to the Japanese people, nonetheless, this does not represent a contradiction in his view.
