| 内容記述 | In the mid-18th century, a self-educated obstetrician named Kagawa Gen'etsu(1700-1777)developed a surgery called kaiseijutsu that used an iron hook to remove fetuses at a time when existing obstetric medicine used abortifacients or incantations to deal with difficult childbirths. Prewar studies of medical history praised this Kagawa school of obstetrics as the cornerstone of the modernization of obstetrics in Japan and celebrated it. However the negative aspects of the modernization of obstetric medicine began to attract attention with the introduction of gender perspectives in around 1990, The development of the Kagawa school of obstetrics, which placed pregnancy and childbirth under the control of medical care, was identified as being linked to the exclusion of family and female networks from where the deliveries took place. Subsequent research attempted to apply the Western modernization model to the Edo period, but this was not based on a detailed examination of historical medical literature. Through clinical records, obstetric literature, and related historical materials, this paper considers the influence of the appearance and spread of the Kagawa school of obstetrics on women, and seeks to clarify what women gained in the history of the modernization of obstetric medicine that previous research did not mention. As a result, this research brings to light examples of the practice of kaiseijutsu that respected the wishes of the mothers and their families, and shows that regard for the body and mind of the mother was taught in obstetrics literature. Figuring in the background were circumstances that did not allow surgery to proceed smoothly if the wishes of mothers, families, and existing female networks were ignored. The birth and spread of the Kagawa school of obstetrics was the starting point for obstetric medicine in Japan to squarely confront, or be forced to confront, the existence of “maternity." In addition, the Kagawa school of obstetrics played a specific role in preparing women for the same medical training as male doctors. This can be regarded as the early history in which female doctor training overcame many obstacles and was institutionalized in the modern medical education system. | |||||
