内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Wechselbalg (Changeling) is a symbol that reflects the primeval fear of human beings. Children who are known as Wechselbalgs have unpleasant features like a disfigured body or a bloated head. They could be portrayed as gluttonous individuals or those who do not show signs of physical growth. In Tischreden, Martin Luther is said to have advocated that Wechselbalgs should be killed because they are just soulless flesh. In a study by Gisela Piaschewski (1935), it is said that a Wechselbalg is left for a mother whose child has been stolen. In Appel (1937) and Petzoldt (1990), the motif of Wechselbalg suggests that they were handicapped children such as, hydrocephalics, cretins, etc. According to Kinya Abe (1990), even if the parents do not want to get rid of the so-called changelings, they have no choice when the community thinks that their children have a harmful influence and that they must be abandoned. He believes that folktales about Wechselbalgs are a consolation for adults who had to get rid of handicapped children. However, there are some folktales about Wechselbalg without any handicapped features. For example, in Grimm's folk tales, especially DS 81 and DS 82, there are children who eat and drink too much and also those who get their parents into trouble by crying anytime, and so on. As a result, the parents, a mother in DS 81 and a father in DS 82, are advised to go on a pilgrimage with the children and to measure their weight. This advice leads to the realization that the children are not really theirs. These children are thrown into the water even though they have no features indicating that they could be suffering from hydrocephalus or cretinism. These two tales indicate that the parents did not abandon the children willingly. The question is, what is reflected in these tales? The keys to understanding these lies in the description, "a gluttonous child" and "a parent is advised." It is implied that a child who eats excessively can be a heavy burden for almost every family. Also, no details are given about the person who advises the parents. The tales imply that the advice could be given by anyone around the parent, indicating that the community that the parent belongs to advises them to abandon the child. Even if a child does not have any features indicating that they could be handicapped, these tales portray that if the child is considered as a nuisance, the community could decide to get rid of them. DS 81 and DS 82 are tales about children who do not have any handicap but are murdered by the community.
