| 内容記述 | There are many expressions that seem syntactically incomplete and yet are pragmatically complete; among these, Evans (2007: 367) refers to insubordination as “the conventionalized main clause use of what, on prima facie grounds, appear to be formally subordinate clauses. This paper discusses one specific type of insubordination: the If + not [P] construction (e.g., [when Tom encounters Peter] Well, if it isn't Peter!). This paper aims to clarify the following characteristics of this construction: forming conditions and the degree of conventionality as insubordination. First, three particular features of the If + not [P] construction are described. The first feature, a formal one, is that the positive proposition [P] must be denied only by not and it must take the indicative mood. The second feature, a semantic one, is that [P] asserts a determined state of affairs that is recognized by the speaker, which contradicts Panther and Thornburg's (2003) description of [P]. The third feature, which is pragmatic, is that the construction expresses a variety of context-dependent emotional attitudes. Based on the aforementioned features, we clarify that the If + not [P] construction can be defined using the following conditions: (i) the construction takes the If + not [P] form with a positive proposition [P] that adopts the indicative mood, (ii) [P] asserts a determined state of affairs that is recognized by the speaker, and (iii) the construction has an expressive function. Only expressions that satisfy all three conditions can be regarded as having an If + not [P] construction. Second, we focus on the following feature: as insubordination, the If + not [P] construction does not possess a main clause. Panther and Thornburg (2003) argue that since the If + not [P] construction has the highest degree of independence, it cannot restore a consequent proposition. This paper, however, contradicts Panther and Thornburg's (2003) theory by revealing that the construction in question can restore possible interpretational main clauses. We can imagine full and rhetorical sentential constructions, such as indicative counterfactuals (Akatsuka 1986), by adding an interpretational main clause to the If + not [P] construction, for example, Well, if it isn't Peter! (the If + not [P] construction) → Well, if in isn't Peter, I'll eat my hat! (indicative counterfactuals). This paper also reveals that the pragmatic function of the If + not [P] construction is fully conventionalized, which is why the construction is highly developed and acts independently. Evans (2007) proposes a diachronic formation model from subordinate constructions to insubordinated clauses, comprising four steps that form a continuum. Considering the aspects of the If + not [P] construction delineated above, it becomes evident that this construction is positioned between the third step (conventionalized ellipsis) and the fourth step (constructionalization) in Evans' (2007) model. Although insubordination is currently a hot topic in linguistics, only a few studies primarily focus on expressive or epistemic insubordination, especially in the English language. Therefore, this paper's findings fill important gaps and will contribute to future research." | |||||||||||
