| 内容記述 | Virginia Woolf's Three Guineas (1938), a book-length essay, was written when the imminence of war was on everyone's mind. In this book, she analyzes why world war is going to happen again from a feminist and pacifist viewpoint. Then, she finds that war is caused by the political implications of patriarchal structure. She explains that a male-oriented society inevitably creates war because of men's desire to possess and control people and lands. Therefore, she claims that the need of new political and cultural identity which could challenge the drive towards fascism and war in Three Guineas. To realize it, she gives some suggestions in Three Guineas. In this paper, her two suggestions to prevent war are focused. The first suggestion is “to build a new college" to produce people who work to maintain the peace of world. Second suggestion is to establish“ an outsider's society which means a pacifist society consists of middle-class women only. The concept of the outsider's society has often drawn critics' attention. However, Woolf's educational ideal about a new college also is worth considering because it expresses her pacifist idea. Woolf says that “the aim of new college … should be not to segregate and specialize, but to combine". Here, “to combine" is shown as an opposite idea to the men's competitive society which creates jealousy and conflicts. This ideal is opposite to the traditional education of Oxbridge which teaches“ the art of dominating other people, of ruling, of killing, of acquiring land and capital". By closely analyzing her suggestions, this paper will clarify that her pacifist idea originates from her liberal cosmopolitanism outlook. | |||||||||||
