| 内容記述 | This paper examines the process by which Emperor Franz Joseph I's trip to Galicia was canceled in 1868, shortly after the Austrian Empire was transformed into the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1867. This new political system, known today as Ausgleich, was established by the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, which resulted in Croatia-Slavonia falling under Hungarian rule and Bohemia, Moravia, Galicia, and so forth falling under Austrian rule. Czech politicians criticized the new system and boycotted the Reichsrat (Parliament of Austria). Polish politicians, while certainly shocked and puzzled, did not participate in the boycott; this was due to the Polonization of the Galician administration and concessions made for Polish autonomy in Galicia. Concomitantly, the Polish pleaded with the Austrian government for the establishment of a Ministry of Galicia and the widening of Galician autonomy to consolidate Polish domination in Galicia. Thereafter, the great Polish Statthalter Agenor Gołchowski proposed that Franz Joseph I make a trip to Galicia. This proposal was accepted, and the trip was planned smoothly; however, two days before the emperor's intended departure, the Galician Sejm (Galician assembly) decided that the trip should be postponed. Eventually, the trip was canceled altogether by Franz Joseph I himself. In debating the reason behind the cancellation of this trip, some researchers have argued that the placing of a Galician Minister in the Austrian government by the Polish was a main factor. However, the circumstances are complex. There is a need to more deeply examine the events that led to the cancellation of the emperor's trip, paying particular attention to the discussions that were held in Galicia's Sejm. | |||||||||||
