内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 It is generally accepted that a custom of visiting graves had not been established in the Heian period because of the consciousness that the avoidance of corpses used to be dominant. However, some historians consider that the nobility of the 10th century visited the graves of their relatives when they were promoted and that this was the beginning of a custom of visiting graves in Japan. However, it cannot be said that this view is entirely correct because in the 11th century, the nobility did not visit graves very often. Therefore, the custom of visiting graves was not established but was a passing phenomenon. Some nobility refused to set up their graves. In such situations, they did not have the common understanding that a grave is a significant location. Nevertheless, this does not mean that they avoided corpses because they sometimes visited the temple where the ashes of their relatives were provisionally laid until they were finally moved to a grave. The location of their relative's ashes, whether in a temple or a grave, may prescribe whether the nobility saw their relative's body or ashes. In the Kamakura period, after the end of the 12th century, nobles and samurai came to visit graves. Considering this change, visiting temples was possibly a phenomenon of the transitional period. However, why they did not visit graves in the 11th century remains unclear and requires further research.
