| 内容記述 | Recently, there has been a shift in focus toward a more detailed understanding of the actual physical challenges and conditions associated with children's learning conditions. We can confirm this trend from the educational research papers on “underachievers" from the perspectives of people involved in “special education" in Japan prior to World War II. From past research on the history of special education classes, we can also observe descriptions of underachievers on the basis of their mental as well as physical characteristics. However, these descriptions were merely plain introductions for clarifying the characteristics of special education classes and underachievers. At the time, there was no detailed research undertaken to examine the relation between underachievers and their physical and mental conditions. In various previous studies, underachievers were described in the context of formal school education; they were children who had learning difficulties and special educational needs. The shift in recent years toward understanding these physically and mentally challenged children deserves attention as it raises awareness of the problem. Therefore, the aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between underachievers and their physical and mental conditions in Japan prior to World War II from the perspectives of people involved in special education in those days. | |||||||||||
