| 内容記述 | Japanese newspaper articles on medical malpractice increased remarkably in 1999 and 2000. However, only few victims of such medical malpractice cases brought their cases to court. Some doctors condemned victims on their personal web blogs, and such attacks were sometimes very damaging for the victims. In this way, medical malpractice has caused social disputes and has become a social problem. In Japan, two terms are used to refer to medical malpractice: `iryou-misu' and `iryou-kago'. Both terms mean `medical errors'. Many doctors are prone to using the alternative term `iryou-jiko', which means `medical accident', because this term is neutral regarding the doctor's responsibility in the medical error. However, Japanese newspapers such as the Asahi, the Mainichi and the Yomiuri have continued to use the terms implying errors on part of medical personnel. Doctors engaged in this debate bitterly criticize newspaper companies for this practice. In this paper, I conducted research using article databases of the Asahi, the Mainichi and the Yomiuri to discuss the characteristics of the Japanese vocabulary used in reporting medical malpractice in Japan. | |||||
