| 内容記述 | There are three examples of the use of "zaigen" (在限) in "Shosoin" documents. One is a wrong use of "yugen" (有限) and read as 'kagiri-ari (かぎりあり)' in the Japanese way, meaning that there is a limit or a deadline. The other two are read as 'aru-kagiri(あるかぎり),' meaning everything that exists. We can find the examples of "yugen" in epigraphs in the "Manyoshu" and in the "Shoku-Nihongi", but not those of "zaigen". "Zaigen" is a Japanese adaptation of the style of classical Chinese for a phrase 'aru-kagiri' and not a correct use of classical Chinese whereas "yugen" is its appropriate use. 'Aru-kagiri' was frequently used in kana in the Heian period while there has been no example of it found in the Nara period. However, the two examples of "zaigen" in "Shosoin" documents show that the expression 'aru-kagiri' was already in use in the Nara period. Despite the fact that "Shosoin" documents have not drawn due attention as a material for the study on the Japanese language because of its extensive use of classical Chinese with the rare exception of the use of "manyogana", this paper demonstrates its usefulness for investigating the Japanese language in the Nara period. | |||||||||||
