| 内容記述 | To understand cultural changes in the rapidly changing society of Aceh, Indonesia, the perception of tradition can be an indicator of cultural continuity. Therefore, this article examines teenagers' perception of the traditionality in food and drink items that are familiar to them. The participants comprised teenage students of both Acehnese and Chinese backgrounds from Banda Aceh. They were presented with 36 cards, each of which included the name of a food or drink item. First, they were asked to classify the cards into three groups (traditional, untraditional, and unclear), and then sort the traditional and untraditional groups into a ranking order. Then, they were asked to classify the same set of cards into three groups (preferred, not-preferred, and unclear) and sort the preferred and not-preferred groups in a ranking order. The data collected by this method were processed into distribution charts with an x-axis (traditional/untraditional) and a y-axis (preferred/not-preferred). The analysis of the type of the charts reveals that Acehnese students tend to judge traditionality of food and drink items less clearly than Chinese students. This finding is in accordance with the Acehnese perception of equality of their traditional clothing and the Islamic clothing. Thus, it can be argued that cultural changes among the Acehnese might have been driven by their attitude to flexibly mix their own cultural elements with elements of other cultures and to accept such mixtures into their lives as far as the Islamic cultural standards allow. | |||||
