| 内容記述 | This paper surveys the two border issues around pragmatics studies on negation, i.e. NPI-licensing and scalar implicatures, and shows the directionality of the present linguistic research of negation. The modern linguistic study on negation starts with the syntactic research by Klima (1964), which claims that negative polarity items (NPIs) such as any, ever, or lift a finger are licensed if they are in construction with (c-commanded by) negative particles. Ladusaw (1980) proposed the notion of "downward entailment" as a unifying semantic property common to NPI-licensing expressions including if, without, reject, etc, but incorrectly excluding only and barely, etc. And then Horn (2002) replaces the semantic notion "downward entailment" with the pragmatic "downward assertion" which properly captures the range of NPI-licensing expressions. Yoshimura (1999) also reveals that a cognitive pragmatic condition plays an important role in NPI-licensing, i.e. NPIs demand to be processed in the Cognitive Structure of Negation. Chierchia (2004) points out the locality of scalar implicatures, which have been regarded as pragmatic instantiations, and claims that scalar implicatures are grammatical and semantic phenomena rather than pure pragmatic ones. Horn (2006) and Noveck (2006) offer convincing evidence against his claim. Chierchia was right in finding the locality of scalar implicature but not in stipulating their theoretical status. Scalar implicatures are properly treated in pragmatics. The research field of pragmatics has been called "waste basket," into which every part that researchers do not analyze appropriately has been thrown away. Now it is gradually getting clear that pragmatics plays a crucial role in analyzing linguistic phenomena. | |||||
