| 内容記述 | In Winesburg, Ohio (1919), most characters are isolated and feel lonely. They do not have good communication and are not able to build a close relationship with other people. Though they have these characteristics, there is one person who has his own measures to express himself; he is Enoch Robinson in “Loneliness." Enoch explains that in the picture he draws “something hidden." He says that this is a “woman," but a woman's figure is not drawn in the picture. Sherwood Anderson describes a similar woman in “Death in the Woods." In this work, a picture is not actually drawn, but one scene where a woman lies in a forest is expressed by the main character narrating. It seems that Anderson began to write the two works at the same time, around 1916. In this paper, I examine why Enoch did not describe the woman's figure in his picture, by comparing these two works. This study shows that Enoch was eternally immature and always felt afraid of women. It will be shown why Enoch is isolated and sinks into loneliness. | |||||||||||
