| 内容記述 | “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" [“The Mariner"] had been composed jointly between William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge until the early stage of the cooperating suggestion. However their discrepancy in the idea of composing poetry led them to abandon the joint composition. The difference of the two poets' idea in the poetry is distinguishingly shown in the purpose of publishing Lyrical Ballads (1798) [LB]. Coleridge aimed to compose his poetry of the supernatural materials while Wordsworth aimed to compose the natural poetry based on everyday life. Moreover, Coleridge, in composing “The Mariner," tried to create the various original poetic techniques which make the readers hold “suspension of disbelief" for the fictitiousness of the work. On the other hand, Wordsworth considered that “The Mariner" undermined the reputation of the first edition of LB and placed his criticism of the work in Notes of the second edition of LB (1800). Considering this criticism as good advice, Coleridge firstly added the marginal glosses to explain the poem in the first edition of Sibylline Leaves (1817). Having been complaining about the representation of the supernatural in “The Mariner," Wordsworth composed “Peter Bell" (1819) to demonstrate that the unnecessary supernatural elements should be excluded from the poetry. This paper aims that Coleridge's idea in the representation of the supernatural in “The Mariner" becomes clarified by comparing with Wordsworth's idea and by tracing the creating process of the work. | |||||||||||
