| 内容記述 | This paper deals with a marked phenomenon of person reference, what I call the “reuse" of deictic expressions. In Japanese conversation there are cases where the speaker intends to refer to a person with the same deictic expression that has been used by the previous speaker. For instance, in the following interaction, the first speaker B uses a first-person deictic expression watakushi to refer to the speaker B herself. On the other hand, the second speaker A uses the same expression to refer to the same referent that the previous speaker has referred to, i.e. the previous speaker B. (1) B: .hhh <watakushi> o doo shiyoo ka [to (h) omotte] I OBJ how do Q QT think “I wonder what to do." (1) A: [hhhh hh .hh]h watakushi wa tsuite-ko nakucha I TOP follow-come must “I (=B) must come." The purpose of this paper is to discuss what is being done by this particular type of reference through the analysis of data extracted from the corpus of telephone conversation CallHome Japanese, especially focused on the indexical nature of deictic expressions. We assume that the referential form selected by the first speaker itself is a marked form and thus encourages the second speaker's “reuse" of the form of the deictic expression. We can observe that the second speaker's turn consists of the elements with the two different speakers' points of view. Therefore the apparently grammatically incorrect use of a deictic expression invites laughter between participants in conversation. We can also observe that the speaker “reuses" a deictic expression to perform the intended activities without being committed to the previous speaker's point of view. The implication of this study is to describe a phenomenon where the first speaker's referential action can affect the next speaker's referential action. This phenomenon suggests that reference is an action which makes a contribution to socially interactive activities. | |||||
