| 内容記述 | Philip Larkin had a friend at Oxford who happened to come to teach philosophy at the same university in Belfast. His wife Patricia Avis read medicine, but was interested in writing poems and novels. Larkin and she got very close and she wrote Playing the Harlot: Or Mostly Coffee, which has a figure modeled on Larkin, though it was posthumously published in late as 1996. The way of thinking and living of the heroine is influenced by the sprit of the times, and could not bring her ability into full play. Her conflicts are described in the background of Larkin's works are more interesting to Larkin readers. With the help of those letters written at the same period, the novel becomes more meaningful and easier to understand. To Patricia Avis the existence of Lakin was crucial in her writing Playing the Harlot: Or Mostly Coffee, which is a commemorative novel for her to treasure the memories she shared with Larkin, and his works must have been her desk-side volumes she almost learnt by heart. | |||||||||||
